Community Health Action of Staten Island
In 1988, a group of advocates, providers, and consumers created the Staten Island AIDS Task Force in response to the AIDS crisis in our community.
The Task Force was the only non-profit community-based organization whose primary mission was HIV prevention, education and direct services for HIV+ Staten Islanders, their families and people at risk.
While HIV education, prevention and care remain our core mission, over the next 20 years, our services expanded in proportion and kind to the needs of our communities.
A state licensed program to serve Staten Islanders struggling with addiction, new initiatives for the LGBT community and youth, and community-based HIV, hepatitis C and STD testing were added to the agency’s portfolio.
In 2004, SIATF changed its name to Community Health Action of Staten Island, expanding its services in response to the evolving needs of HIV+ people and others in need.
The mission of Community Health Action of Staten Island is to improve the lives of individuals, families and communities challenged by health disparities related to poverty, discrimination and lack of access through service, education and advocacy.
The agency has four storefronts in neighborhoods with the highest rates of HIV, STD, poverty and substance use. We also have programs located at our St. George administrative offices and in local state prisons, NYC probation, and NYS Parole Offices.
Our Mobile Health Unit is out three days and two nights a week, serving eight neighborhoods with health information, education and screening services, as well as comprehensive HIV prevention services.
In February 2008, we opened the Staten Island LGBT Community Center at 25 Victory Boulevard to provide a safe and welcoming “home” for LGBT folks.
In March 2009, we launched a “client choice” Community Food Pantry and service center in Port Richmond to serve the poor and working poor.
In September 2011, we welcomed Planned Parenthood of NYC to our St. George youth storefront to expand reproductive health services in the borough.
